English 102CD: Expository Writing

Fall 2007

Dr. Susanne George Bloomfield

Terry Tempest Williams writes, "We listen to other people's stories and then we write our own." English 102: Native American will focus on reading and writing the stories that help us understand who we "imagine ourselves to be" (N. Scott Momaday).

The course will require four writing assignments. One will formally analyze an aspect of Pieces of White Shell: A Journey to Navajoland, creative nonfiction by Terry Tempest Williams. Two will use chapters from the text as models to explore topics such as personal artifacts, a sense of place, stories and myths, and traditions and rituals. Appropriate research will add depth and significance to the essays. The final assignment will be a research paper on a Native American subject.
