MOVIE ANALYSIS FORMAT
I. Synopsis
Briefly summarize the narrative--be sure to tell the name of the movie. Give the names of the director, the producer, the actors and actresses in the leading roles, and the date the movie was released. Is the movie based on a book? What is the Title? Who is the author? (one page only!)
II. Critical Responses
Review what critics have said about the movie, consulting both movie reviews and critical analyses. When were the reviews or articles written? How did the time period affect the way the movie was reviewed? Have attitudes towards the movie changed today? (500-750 words)
III. Myths and Stereotypes of the Frontier
What frontier myths, legends, and/or stereotypes are present in the movie? Regeneration through violence? Conflict between savagery and civilization? Bootstrap Myth? Rugged Individualism? The American Dream? Are Native Americans represented stereotypically? How are Whites, especially white males, represented? How are women represented? Is the theme of Manifest Destiny evident? What is the relationship and/or attitude of the characters to the land/the west? Are the characters, White, or Indian, well-rounded, human beings who are realistically depicted? Explain, giving specific examples from the movie to support your views. Pick one or two of the above ideas and explain in detail. (500-750 words) (500-750 words)
IV. Personal Evaluation
What is the major theme of this movie? Does it have any redeeming social, political, or personal values? Does it exemplify any universal truths? Is the movie factual and realistic? How would you evaluate this work in terms of entertainment? Did you like the movie? Would you advise others to see it? On a scale of 1-5, rate this movie for today's audiences. (250-500 words)
V. Bibliography
Using the MLA style manual, compile a bibliography to list the sources you consulted. (Check "Chuck's Movie Reviews": http://users.southeast.net/~chuckd21/index1.html)
*** Hand in two copies of the final revision--one to be marked and returned and the other for professor's files.
*** Double space everything with one inch margins on all four sides. You do not need to begin a new page for each section. In addition to the content and quality of critical thinking in the Movie Review itself, grammar, style, punctuation, and correct form will also be considered in your grade.
