2. The following writing assignments will be required of all students:
Each student will be required to write a daily reading response of approximately 250-350 words (English 254 = 200-250 words). Responses may consist of some personal responses to the text, but critical commentary will be preferred. Students should select some idea or aspect of the text that interests them and use the "Sandwich Technique." (1. Introduce idea and set up quote 2. Add quote for support 3. Comment on quote. Follow correct MLA format for quotations.) The responses will be handed in each class period and will receive + or - marks.

3. Grades will be determined by three factors:

    1. Midterm Critical Analysis
Students will critically analyze one or more of the literary works we have studied and submit a mid-term paper of approximately 6-8 pages (English 254= 4-6 pages). The specificity of the thesis will determine the length, and students will be expected to use quotations from the text as support. Outside research is not necessary, but if used, sources must be acknowledged or the work will be considered plagiarized and will not be accepted. The paper must be typed according to MLA format, and correct grammar, organization, and style will be considered in determining the grade. Papers and all rough drafts must be submitted in a two-pocket folder. The Critical Analysis will count as 40% of the final grade.
    2. Final Researched Critical Analysis
A final critical paper, including at least three to four outside sources, will be due during finals week. It should be approximately 10-12 pages long (2,500-3,000 words at @250 words per page); the specificity of the thesis again will determine the length (English 254 = 8-10 with two outside sources). Students may analyze a particular work or author, or may choose to do a comparative study of several works read during the semester, narrowing the focus, of course, to a specific theme, idea, etc. The paper must include a Works Cited page and must be typed according to MLA form. Correct grammar, organization, and style will be considered in determining the grade. The paper and all rough drafts must be submitted in a two-pocket folder. The Researched Critical Analysis will count as 60% of the final grade.
    3. Attendance and Daily Assignments

Poor attendance, unread assignments, and uncompleted daily writing responses will lower a student's final grade.

3. Papers will be given letter grades which will be translated numerically as follows: A+=99; A=96; A-+92; B+=88; B=85; B-=82; C+=78; C=75; C-+72; D+=68; D=64; D-60; F= 50.
