Kate Cleary: Timeline

1863-1905

1819 Kate's father James McPhelim, is born in Ireland.

1834 Kate's mother, Margaret Kelly, is born in Ivy Lodge, Borrisoleigh, County Tipperary,Ireland.

1856 Margaret Kelly marries James McPhelim in New Brunswick. They have four children: Edward Joseph, Catherine Chrystal (dies in infancy), Kate Theressa, and Francis Albert.

1855 Michael Timothy Cleary is born in Clonmel, Tipperary, Ireland on April 26.

1863 Kate McPhelim is born in Richibucto, New Brunswick, on August 22. James Mansfield Cleary and son Michael, 8, immigrate to St. Louis; they move to Chicago where his father joins a wholesale liquor firm.

1865 Kate's father dies at age 46.

1877 Kate, 14, publishes her first poem.

1878 Kate, 15, publishes her first story, "Only Jerry," in Saturday Night.

1880 Hubbell, Nebraska, is established. Kate's mother moves with her three children to Chicago: Kate is 17.

1881 Burlington Railroad completes its track through Hubbell with four trains daily. The first school is established and the Presbyterian Church built.

1883 Michael Cleary travels to Hubbell with plans of resettling in the West. He decides to begin a lumber business with the help of his brother-in-law John Templeton of Superior, Nebraska.

1884 Kate McPhelim marries Michael Timothy Cleary on February 26 in Chicago and moves to Hubbell, Nebraska. Her mother, Margaret McPhelim, relocates with them. Kate publishes novel The Lady of Lynhurst.

1887 Son James Mansfield is born on January 19. Kate publishes Vella Vernel, or An Amazing Marriage.

1888 Elia and Robert Peattie move to Omaha to work for the Omaha World Herald.

1889 Daughter Marguerite is born on January 18. Brother Francis Albert McPhelim dies on April 14, age 24.

1890 Son Gerald Vernon is born on September 8.

1892 Daughter Rosemarie Catherine is born on May 19.

1893 Kate's mother, Margaret, dies of pneumonia on August 4, age 59. June Kate's poems are recited at the Chicago World's Fair in June.

1894 Daughter Vera Valentine is born on Valentine's Day. Kate falls dangerously ill from childbed fever. On December 2, Daughter Marguerite, nearly 6, dies of typhoid fever.

1895 Michael leaves for Chicago in February; his lumber business and health are failing. In March, daughter Rosemarie dies, age 3. Kate has a series of "heart attacks" and dysentery. Baby Vera Valentine becomes seriously sick with typhoid fever; Michael returns home briefly.

1896 Kate, with son Jim, is very active in the McKinley presidential campaign. The Peatties return to Chicago to work for the Chicago Tribune.

1897 Son Edward Sheridan("Teddy") is born on January 11. Brother Edward Joseph "Teddy" McPhelim dies on June 11, age 34. Kate publishes Like a Gallant Lady.

1898 Michael sells lumberyard in February. Rosemary is reinterred in Chicago's Calvary Cemetery. In April, Michael leaves for the Pacific Coast; Kate and the children remain in Hubbell. In May, Michael returns home for one week before departing for Chicago. In July, the family moves to Chicago.

1902 James graduates at age 15 to become the youngest high school graduate in Chicago. He enters University of Illinois. Kate commits herself to private Sanitarium for morphine addiction, but without success.

1903 Kate collapses, and on October 13, she enters the Illinois Northern Hospital for the Insane at Elgin for treatment of morphine addiction.

1904 Kate is released from Elgin on Feb. 5. She lives with the Peatties for three months on probation and is released "sane" on May 5. In August, Kate rents a room at the Monarch Hotel; in the fall, she moves across the street to the Palace Hotel. Although separated, Michael and Kate celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary at the Cafe Brauer.

1905 Her husband obtains a court order on July 6 to commit Kate to an insane asylum; a jury finds her sane, and she is released. Kate dies on July 16, age 42 and is buried in Calvary cemetery.

1911 Son Edward Sheridan ("Teddy")Cleary dies on June 7, age 14, and is buried in Calvary Cemetery.

1917 Michael Cleary dies in South Haven, Michigan, age 62, on September 7.

1922 Cleary's children publish a book of poetry by Kate, Edward McPhelim, and Margaret McPhelim entitled Poems.

1958 James Mansfield Cleary edits a collection of Kate's stories, The Nebraska of Kate McPhelim Cleary.

1971 Gerald Vernon Cleary dies May 19, age 80.

1972 James Mansfield Cleary dies on March 4, age 72.

1980 Vera Valentine Bullard dies, age 86.
